“Come to Me and Rest” (Matthew 11:28-30)

“Come to me and rest” marks the difference between religion (the Pharisees) and relationship (with Jesus). Too often we focus on self, what we can do, or should do, or need to do because of the demands of others or what we expect of ourselves. But Jesus wants us to rest in who he created us to be. He wants us to come to him, so he can forgive us our sins and nurture us in a spiritual relationship with the Father.

We have entered into communion with the Holy One! Kevin DeYoung once wrote a book, Just Do Something. If I ever have time, I’ll write a balancing book, Don’t Do Anything—at least initially. As the psalmist said, “Wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:14; 37:7, 34). Be still and know that the Lord is God, and he will be exalted among the nations (Psalm 46:10). Look to Him, and we will show you the way. THEN you can act.

“Come to me and rest.” What is your yoke? What is your heavy load? Come to Jesus. Bring it to him. He will lift it for you. “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” One thing God has given us to lighten our load is the community of believers. While “each will have to bear his own load” (Galatians 6:5), Paul writes, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

“Come to me and rest.” At our ministry with Oasis Rest International, we try to do just that. If you are a Christian pastor, missionary, scholar, or leader in a Christian organization, get away for a while (Mark 6:31). At Oak Tree Cottage, we host and coach and provide personalized retreats free of charge, thanks to gracious donors. You can book a retreat by going to oaktreecottage.org. We hope to see you soon!
