John’s Transposition Theology

“John’s Transposition Theology: Retelling the Story of Jesus in a Different Key,” in Earliest Christian History: History, Literature, and Theology. Essays from the Tyndale Fellowship in Honor of Martin Hengel (ed. Michael F. Bird and Jason Maston; WUNT 2/320; Tübingen: Mohr/Siebeck, 2012), 191–226.

The aim of this essay is to address the knotty question of the relationship between John and the Synoptics. The focus is not be primarily historical, though historical questions will inevitably surface and always loom in the background. The study will be carried out based on a comparison between John’s overall literary plan and major theological distinctives and those of the Synoptics.
