Jesus as Rabbi in the Fourth Gospel

In recent discussions about John’s presentation of Jesus, one aspect has been neglected: the evangelist’s portrayal of Jesus as a Jewish rabbi. It is not argued here that this is the major, or even a major, aspect of Johannine Christology. Rather, as will be seen, John reflects the common perception of Jesus among his contemporaries, friends and foes alike: that Jesus was, perhaps more, but certainly no less, than a rabbi.
